All Good Things... The End Of Post Numbers

So it's been mentioned a couple times, but in case you weren't paying attention, you'll notice that blog numbers are slowly, but surely going the way of the doo-doo.

A staple of my blogging experiences since the old DTM Blog over at the tripod space in the mid-2000s, the blog post number is something that I liked adding to a post in order to signify a continuing journey throughout this web experience of sorts. More than the dates, the numbers represented a reason to celebrate "fake" milestones... and they were indeed fake milestones... but they were reason enough to throw up a silly little banner or even an entire video special when this blog hit 1,000 posts for the first time.

Eventually, some things wear out their welcome and while I never felt the post numbers were "out of style" or anything of the sort, I'd be lying if I said they weren't restrictive in how I post content. If any post featured a broken link or missing video, I'd have to replace it with something else; usually something out of the old archives. And to its credit, it's worked out just fine.

However, with the closure of the old DTM Blog some time ago and the desire to migrate some of that content over to this blog while maintaining their original dates of publication, it got to a point where keeping the post numbers would be problematic. How could something be the 45th post on the blog when there were 89 posts that came before?

I thought about keeping them... but in the end, I opted to ditch them.

In a way, this makes the most sense because it allows for more flexibility. If there's old content to post, I can post it and keep the original date so that if you want to look up something I posted back in 2007 - and I honestly don't know why you would - then you can do that easily with the drop-down menu rather than rely on blog titles that tell you nothing. In this regard, it can be a blog post on its own and not saddled with a DTM Archives label on it.

As for the aforementioned DTM Archives label? That's still going to be around; it's the name of the second YT channel and some video compilations that I throw up will still have the label.

It's been fun counting the blog post numbers... but then again, all good things must come to an end. And sometimes, an ending is a new beginning... or something.

Goodbye, blog post numbers. And thanks for the memories.
