2487 - Classic Post #179 - A Sports Entertainment Tribute To Eddy

Originally posted Wednesday, November 30, 2005 over at the original DTM Blog. WWE aired a "live" special edition of Smackdown, in which audiences were treated to two matches; Chris Benoit vs. Booker T and Rey Mysterio vs. Big Show in an Eddie tribute match. It's not much, but sums up my feelings on the show for the time. I've not seen this thing in years, so I can't properly recall what the show was like, but I also included some 2010 summations as a note.

If you saw the Tuesday Smackdown Tuesday, then you already know this stuff. If you haven't, well, here's what happened.

CHRIS BENOIT is beaten by BOOKER T, making it 2 - 0 for the Book.

The "David vs. Goliath" tribute match (to Eddy) REY MISTERIO and BIG SHOW ended in a no-contest, due to Kane showing up, 'Taker showing up, Ortons showing up, and an exploding lowrider.

Because we couldn't have a tribute to a great wrestler (a legend in many people's eyes) without adding in a little sports entertainment. If Vince gets flack for something considered tasteless (and since I didn't catch it, I can't say), great. If he doesn't, well great. Just remember that this is sports entertainment, the most tasteless form of entertainment in the world today.

Just saying.

2010 Update: And if you think this bout of "Eddie-sploitation" is the worst it could get, you'd be proven wrong as Eddie's name would be dragged to the mud for several months, including a Rey Mysterio World title reign (which he won in Eddie's name) that was horribly booked and ultimately disgraceful in the long run. Nothing against Mysterio - he did the best he could as champion despite being on the losing end more often than not - but this title reign shouldn't have happened in the circumstances it occurred.
